Improving grid strength in a wide‐area transmission system with grid forming inverters

This paper summarizes Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) simulation studies using PSCAD/EMTDC undertaken to evaluate the capability and suitability of commercially available large scale Grid Forming Inverters (GFMI) dampen oscillations in a real bulk power transmission network. Faults range grid voltage oscillation frequencies are tested on GFMI synchronous condenser (SC) models single source equivalent network model comparisons transient, post fault oscillatory rejection tests presented. A critical credible West Murray Zone (WMZ) was simulated wide-area EMT Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) show effectiveness providing system strength services improving damping sub-synchronous control interactions (SSCI). Two scenarios were examined: Direct replacement existing centralized condensers WMZ NEM, decentralized distribution (treated as expansion or repowering solution for following inverter equipped solar farms). Simulation results that viable option practical with high proportion Inverter Based Resources (IBR).
